Eric Haynes became the center of an investigation as officer Giovanni Maysonet and his unnamed colleague were conducting a vehicle investigation of a silver 1999 Lexus model ES 300 on North 60th Street Wednesday Feb. 8, around 3:30 p.m., city police said.

One officer approached the driver's side of as Maysonet approached the passenger side door. That's when Haynes, the passenger, got out of the car and turned away from Maysonet, police said.

In response, Maysonet began grasping Haynes' midsection with both hands, holding him. Haynes fired a gun at least two times towards Maysonet, who fell backwards against the back of the Lexus, before falling to the ground, police said.

Maysonet's colleague discharged several rounds from his firearm towards Haynes, who was not struck and ran away, authorities said. Maysonet suffered a gunshot wound through his stomach, and was rushed to the hospital by his colleague.

Maysonet was initially listed in critical condition but has since been upgraded to stable condition.

Philadelphia SWAT officers saw Haynes in the driver’s seat of a parked vehicle in the back alley behind the 6800 block of Guyer Avenue. Haynes was taken into custody without incident, police said.

A black semi-automatic firearm loaded with 17 live 9mm rounds, with one round chambered was found on the cement driveway near the driver’s door of the car that Haynes was arrested in.

Maysonet is a five-year veteran of the PPD, assigned to the 19th District. His colleague, 28, is a four-year veteran of the department. He has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.

Haynes was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, assault of a law enforcement officer, VUFA former convict, and more.
